Südtiroler Speck mit Essiggurken

Marende was originally a meal for farmers after their hard work. Due to the strenuous physical activity, 5 main meals were previously eaten throughout the day instead of the usual 3 today. Breakfast, half lunch, lunch, snack and dinner. I will go into more detail about the Marende here. If you are interested in finding out what the other traditional farm meals look like, please write in the comments.

Today the Marende is mainly known as Speckbrettl, a popular classic in South Tyrolean inns and alpine huts. Here too, the snack still tastes best after work or hiking. A hike without the prospect of delicious food at the hut is only half as much fun. Now what does a real Marende consist of? Ultimately, from what the farmer's pantry used to have to offer. South Tyrolean bacon, smoked sausages, ham, mountain cheese, butter, pickles and a bread basket full of farmer's bread and Schüttelbrot. This is accompanied by a South Tyrolean Vernatsch, a light, indigenous grape variety that is grown everywhere in South Tyrol. The products just have to be finely sliced and lovingly arranged and everything is ready! So simple and yet so good.
